Campfires. You want one.
We love making campfires. Sitting outside after dark with a good fire going, not so large and smokey as to disturb our neighbors, but not so small and cold as to not be worth it. Building a fire is an...

The Wall
I have hit the wall. In our current RV, I'm not sure what more we can do to improve things. I've found that many newer RVs are even coming with builtin smart home technology, meaning much of what I'm trying...

Self-Care That Boosts Mental Health Without Breaking the Bank

Self-Care That Boosts Mental Health Without Breaking the Bank

It’s not always easy to carve out time or funds for luxurious self-care. Spa days and shopping trips might not be in your budget when you’re trying to save money. Thankfully, there are many ways you can indulge in self-care and support your mental health without overspending. Let these tips from Sweet Honeybee Health be your guide! Pencil in Time for Fitness Exercise can help you develop an all-around healthy lifestyle. The benefits of getting your body moving include both physical and mental health benefits, says Walden University, especially for people who experience depression, stress, and anxiety. It’s a self-esteem and mood booster, and the feel-good chemistry has long lasting, positive effects. You can save on the equipment and fitness gear you need by shopping for deals with retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods or Nike. Some retailers offer free shipping, and you can tack on coupons for even more savings. Saving as much as possible can make your fitness regimen even more rewarding. If making time for gym visits or workout time is tough, consider an under-desk elliptical. These fitness machines are low-impact, gentle on your body, and still promote aerobic fitness. They store easily so you can use them at home or at work, and many can be used either sitting or standing. Research reviews to find one that’s the best fit for your space, budget, and plans. Take Steps to Reduce Stress Reducing stress can be complicated since so many factors come into play. But you can start reducing stress by practicing healthier habits—like saying no to too many responsibilities. If you find it challenging to stand up for or express yourself, consider booking an appointment for talk therapy. Eating healthy foods can also reduce your stress levels. Start by rethinking snacktime. If you find yourself reaching for too many sweet treats or foods containing empty calories, get rid of the junk food and buy healthier snacks. Choose foods that pair well with your dietary restrictions. For example, if you’re avoiding gluten, popcorn is an easy snack to make. For low-calorie options, try roasting pumpkin seeds or whipping up egg cups. Addressing your mental health can also involve scheduling time to relax. Me-time doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. Sitting quietly for a few minutes—or even meditating—can help you feel calmer and more focused, and many meditation apps are free or low-cost. Enjoying nature is also beneficial, fostering creativity, lowering stress levels, and boosting immunity. Best of all, it’s free. Take Note of Your Sleep Habits Getting enough rest is one of the cheapest and simplest ways to improve your stress levels. Studies also show that people who are sleep-deprived tend to experience more mental health struggles, says Harvard Health. Keeping your bedroom cool and quiet can help you unwind after a hectic day, but scheduling enough hours (seven to eight for most adults) is vital, too. If you find it difficult to fall asleep at night, consider whether your use of technology is causing insomnia. The artificial light that smartphones, tablets, and televisions exude can affect the way your body interprets evening hours. Your brain might be wired to stay awake, simply because there’s a blue light in your sleep environment. This is another reason why it’s crucial to consider your sleep location and habits. Try Natural Remedies While taking medication is necessary for some conditions, it’s not a one-size-fits-all fix. There are also natural remedies that can help with stress relief and self-care. Sweet Honeybee Health recommends giving CBD a try. In addition, you can add essential oils to your self-care arsenal like lavender, bergamot, lemongrass, frankincense, and others for stress relief. Even habits like drinking tea daily can help reduce stress. Tea flavors like peppermint, chamomile, lemon balm, and green tea all have a reputation for promoting relaxation. Some research also suggests that the habit of preparing and sitting down with a cup of tea can be therapeutic for people who feel anxious or overwhelmed. Of course, the ritual and inherent self-care involved in preparing a cup of tea involves the same emotions and investment as getting ready for a run or scheduling an appointment with a therapist. Contemplate your best self-care strategies. No matter your choice, it’s important to be consistent and intentional with it for maximum benefits—no extra costs required.
